Support for small languages in recent EU calls Calls for proposals for Socrates and Culture 2000 gives priorities for less widely used language projects.
The 2006 Call reflects the increased support for and interest in linguistic diversity.
Lingua 2 will help projects "to develop materials for teaching less widely used and less taught languages, to primary and pre-primary learners; projects for the development and valorisation of new, specific methodologies for teaching subjects through less widely used and less taught languages; projects promoting multilingual comprehension between languages of the same linguistic family." The last will be of particular interest for project managers from the smaller language groups such as Finno-Ugric and Celtic.
Grundtvig also stipulates support for regional or minority language projects. The deadline for applications remains November 1.
In addition, part of the new Culture 2000 call aims to facilitate the translation of recent fiction written in less widely used European languages.
According to the Culture 2000 call for 2006, "funding will be given to approximately fifty projects for the translation of literary works (fiction) written by European authors and published after 1950; priority will be given to works written in the less widely-used European languages - including regional languages as well as acceding and candidate countries languages - or translated into these languages." Applicants will again have to be speedy because applications for Culture 2000 have to be in by 17th October.
